The UC Davis football team will be in Hawaii for less than 48 hours for Saturday’s game against the Warriors.
“It’s a business trip,” head coach Bob Biggs said. “We’re not here for a vacation, unfortunately.”
Biggs already has undergone the island experience. After being released by the Denver Broncos in 1975, Biggs called a family friend, Mike Vasconcellos, who was the athletic director at what was known then as Chaminade College.
Vasconcellos extended an invitation to Biggs, who moved to Hawaii and lived in Kaimuki for two years.
“I used to run the Palolo Recreation Center way back when,” Biggs said.
In his free time, Biggs hit the beach.
“I loved Makapuu,” he said. “I used to go there all the time to bodysurf. I just loved the island. I love the culture and the people. I just had a wonderful experience there. I met a lot of really nice people, and stayed in touch over the years.”
Steve Keil was in Biggs’ wedding party. Keil’s brother, Larry, is the head golf pro at Turtle Bay.
Biggs said he misses plate lunches.
“Back in the day, that’s all I could afford,” Biggs said.
He also was a regular at a Korean restaurant on Waialae Avenue.
“Kim chee was one of my favorites,” Biggs said. “I couldn’t get enough of it.”
Correa has surgery
UH defensive tackle HakuCorrea had surgery Thursday to repair a displaced fracture in his ankle.
A special procedure was used to shorten his recovery period. The usual surgery would have kept him from playing the rest of this season. With this procedure, it is hoped Correa will need only six weeks of rehabilitation.
The junior already has used a redshirt season.
Top recruits sidelined
Two of UH’s heralded recruits from the 2011 class will not be on the field for a while.
Defensive end Tavita Woodard, who had foot surgery last month, was told he needed to undergo a two-week rehabilitation program. Woodard hopes to be available for the Oct. 14 road game against San Jose State.
Linebacker Brendan Daley said he will have season-ending foot surgery today.
It’s been an unfortunate start for Daley, who recently recovered from a strained neck. Daley joined UH with three years to play two seasons.
Meanwhile, backup defensive end Desmond Dean suffered an apparent knee injury during Thursday’s practice.
