The worker killed in an accident at a Hawaii island zipline Wednesday was identified today as Ted Callaway, 36, of Maui, the Hawaii County Police Department announced.

A worker who was critically injured was identifed by police as Curtis Wright of Ohio. He remained in critical condition today at Hilo Medical Center, police said.

Both men were employed by a Maui company, Experiential Resources Inc., that builds and maintains ziplines. They had just made an adjustment to a cable for a zipline operation run by Lava Hotline near Paukaa north of Hilo and were in the process of testing it.

Callaway had traveled about halfway across the 2,300-foot span when a tower collapsed and he fell about 200 feet to his death, police said.

Wright fell 30 feet when the tower collapsed. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition with multiple internal injuries. Police said he is 35 years old but his employer said he is 43 years old.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday to determine the exact cause of Callaway’s death, police said.
