Fundraiser for police officer killed by pickup truck is set for Sunday

A fundraiser is being held Sunday at Chai’s Island Bistro by officers with the Honolulu Police Department for the family of the late officer Eric Fontes, who was killed when a pickup truck ran into him during a routine traffic stop on Farrington Highway near Ko Olina on Sept. 13.

Presale tickets cost $25 and the event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Aloha Tower Market Place restaurant. It will feature a light dinner buffet by Chef Chai Chaowasaree.

Tickets are available at Chai’s, the main branch of the Hawaii Law Enforcement Credit Union at 1537 Young Street, and the credit union’s branches in Pearl City and Kapolei. Cash only.

Proceeds from the benefit will go toward assisting the Fontes family with funeral expenses, including the cost of flying over to Oahu family members from Fontes’ home island of Molokai.

The Honolulu services are set for 3 to 9 p.m. Sept. 30 at Borthwick Mortuary. A service begins at 5:30.
