Ching wins golf event in San Diego
Punahou graduate Alex Ching got his fourth collegiate golf win Tuesday, capturing the San Diego Intercollegiate at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista. Ching has finished in the Top 10 at every tournament in his senior year at University of San Diego.
He began the final day in third place, with the final three holes of Monday’s second round suspended. Tuesday morning he birdied two of those holes to finish a 4-under-par 68. He followed with a final-round 72 for a 54-hole total of 214. Ching won by a shot over Garrick Porteous of Tennessee. They were the only golfers to break par.
Ching, who won the Manoa Cup and state high school championships in 2008, is ranked 42nd nationally. He beat three Stanford players ranked in the Top 10 this week.
USD finished sixth in the 15-team tournament, which was won by Washington.
Ching’s sister Alina, a freshman at Pepperdine, is 11th going into today’s final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional at Palos Verdes Golf Club in California. Baldwin graduate Cassy Isagawa, an Oregon freshman, is another shot back.
