Chaminade picks 2 for its Hall of Fame
Chaminade University will induct longtime sportscaster Jim Leahey and former Silverswords athletic director Mike Vasconcellos to the Silversword Hall of Fame.
"We are delighted to recognize Jim Leahey and Mike Vasconcellos as our newest inductees," Chaminade President Brother Bernard Ploeger. "Both exemplify an enduring sense of family spirit and have lasting legacies in local sports."
Leahey graduated from Saint Louis School and attended Chaminade College in the early 1960s and has spent decades doing play-by-play of Hawaii sports on television and radio.
Vasconcellos was Chaminade’s athletic director in the 1980s. He was instrumental in hiring Merv Lopes, who coached the Silverswords basketball team to a huge upset of No. 1 Virginia in 1982. Then, in 1984, Vasconcellos had a big part in starting what is now the EA Sports Maui Invitational, which is hosted annually by Chaminade and attracts some of the top college basketball teams in the country.
Leahey and Vasconcellos will be inducted March 16, 2012, at the Pacific Beach Hotel.
