It’s the only musical instrument classified as a weapon of war, and with all the things that go bang and boom in the movies, why not the stirring call of chanter and drones as well?

“Bagpipes in the Movies,” a presentation featuring filmmaker Patrick King and singer Isla St. Clair, will be presented at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in the First Floor Reading Room of the Hawaii State Library.

Using storytelling, film clips, and music, King and St. Clair will examine how bagpipes have affect people during times of war, as well as peace.

King, a member of the British Academy of Film & Television Arts and a journalist and documentarian, helped create the films “Instrument of War” and “When the Pipers Play.” St. Clair is a well-known singer in Scotland; her latest release is “Highland Laddie: the Story of the Scottish Soldier.”

Presented by the Hawaii Caledonian Society, the presentation is free and open to the public. St. Clair and Hawaii’s own pipers and Scots dancers will perform in concert at 7:30 Friday night at Tenney Theater, admission $20.
