Volunteer work prompts donation
Central Pacific Bank has donated $1,000 to Special Olympics Hawaii on behalf of employee Amy Nagano, a teller at the Kapahulu branch.
The donation was part of a yearlong Employee Rewards Program that tracked the community service efforts of each Central Pacific Bank employee. The employee who participated in the most community service projects was awarded $1,000 to donate to a charity or nonprofit organization of his or her choice.
Throughout 2011 Nagano participated in community projects including Salvation Army’s Angel Tree, Aloha for Japan, Okinawan Festival, Ready to Learn, Adopt a School, Aloha United Way, Earth Day and Filipino Fiesta.
“Special Olympics Hawaii is dear to my family,” Nagano said. “My cousin Tiffany has been a Special Olympics athlete all her life, and her older brother Matthew has also been a part of the program for many years. I chose Special Olympics because I want to make sure my cousins continue to have fun and participate in this.”
In 2011 Central Pacific Bank employees’ volunteer contributions and donations helped more than 100 organizations statewide.
Credit unions offer free tax help
Hawaii credit unions are again providing free tax preparation services to their members and communities.
Hawaii Alliance for Community-Based Economic Development and the Internal Revenue Service have collaborated with credit unions to train, certify and equip managers and staff to prepare tax returns.
The alliance is offering an incentive savings program for new savings accounts opened at participating credit unions. The National Credit Union Administration is alerting qualified taxpayers of credit union locations providing tax help.
The efforts of eight participating credit unions during last year’s tax season generated more than $1.1 million of which more than $280,000 was in EITC claims alone.
Credit union free tax assistance sites are on Oahu, Hawaii island, Kauai and Maui. For more information, go to www.hcul.org/news-item/ 708771-hawaii-credit-unions-offer-free-tax.
