It’s fun when your team is winning
Are you ready for some more football?
No, not the NFL games that start this week, but from our own University of Hawaii Warriors, who had a fabulous debut this past Saturday at Aloha Stadium, tromping the Colorado Buffaloes 34-17, and who this Saturday will go up against the University of Washington Huskies in Seattle.
The Huskies also scored a victory in their season debut, but it didn’t come easy. And though they are considered the favorite this weekend, it’s probably only because they have the home-field advantage.
Is UH intimidated that Washington is a Pac-12 team? Nope. Its last opponent was, too.
For isle residents who can’t make it to Seattle, the game will be broadcast on Oceanic’s pay-per-view channel for just a mere (cough) $65, or $32.50 if you’re on a neighbor island.
Go Warriors!
Get feds to help end copper thefts?
Copper theft is rising again here, along with the commodity price for the metal.
But this is happening across the country, so it’s heartening to see Uncle Sam trying to do something about it.
At one key installation, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy installed a perimeter security system to frustrate the thieves.
It consists of lighting (energy-efficient, of course), specialized surveillance cameras that can withstand a high-voltage environment, and fencing equipped with detection devices.
We can hope that it’s not just power plants that get this treatment.
How about it, U.S. Department of Transportation? A little security for copper-infused utility poles on our federal freeways, perhaps?
