The Hawaii women’s soccer team came up empty on its three-game swing through California, finishing with a 1-0 loss at Saint Mary’s in Moraga on Tuesday.
Another winning West Coast team had enough to keep the Rainbow Wahine (0-6) winless via an own goal in the 56th minute. The Gaels’ Kaytlyn Steele kicked a hard cross that deflected off the knee of a UH defender and past goalkeeper Kanani Taaca.
Saint Mary’s (4-1-1) beat UH for the eighth time in nine meetings. First-year coach Michele Nagamine remained unbowed by the losses against quality teams in nonconference play.
"We actually were very organized. This was their third game in five days and they played like it was their first game," Nagamine said. "I think we hit a lot of really good milestones as a team."
Taaca saved five shots and defender Brittani Lum had a team-high three shots at the other end.
UH plays Hawaii Pacific on Sunday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
