Hawaii Pacific trips Dominican in hoops
Fran Urli scored 14 points, LaBrent Chappell added 13 and Nick Frazier had 10 as Hawaii Pacific beat Dominican 64-52 in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at McKinley High.
The Sea Warriors shot 23-for-41 from the field.
Connor Haysbert scored 16 points and Derek Ober added 13 for Dominican.
HPU improved to 8-12 and 3-9; Dominican dropped to 7-16 and 6-6.
Gravely leads HPU in 68-point rout
Paris Gravely scored 31 points and four other Hawaii Pacific players scored in double figures in a 111-43 rout of Dominican in a PacWest women’s basketball game Saturday at McKinley High.
Mana Hopkins had 18 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists, Susannah Walmsley had 16 points, Melody Ladrido added 14 and Taiyande Huskey contributed 10 for the Sea Warriors.
HPU was 39-for-77 from the field, forced 29 turnovers and held a 51-35 rebounding advantage.
HPU improved to 12-10 and 6-6; Dominican dropped to 3-19 and 2-10.
BYUH sweeps Chaminade in softball
Brigham Young-Hawaii scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 9-1 victory over Chaminade to complete a nonconference softball doubleheader sweep Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
In the first game, BYU-Hawaii scored all four of its runs in the top of the seventh in a 4-3 victory over Chaminade, who left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning. Chandra Tewari drove in two runs, and Brooke Perriton and Tiffanee Frampton each drove in one for the Seasiders.
BYU-Hawaii improved to 3-1; Chaminade fell to 1-3.
HPU sweeps UHH in baseball doubleheader
Hawaii Pacific pounded out 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Hawaii-Hilo as both teams opened their seasons at Hans L’Orange Park on Saturday.
The Sea Warriors won the first game 17-7 and took the second game 14-7.
Designated hitter Rylan Morihara went 7-for-11 in the two games for HPU.
Tanaka, Schubert to speak at QB Club
Hawaii News Now sports director Chris Tanaka and professional tennis player Thomas Schubert will be the featured speakers at Monday’s weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Tanaka, who was recently appointed to his current position, also has worked in Denver; Great Falls, Mont.; and Los Angeles.
Schubert, a former Brigham Young University player, qualified as a touring professional and served as a writer for 10sballs.com. He travels on the USTA Pro Circuit Challenger Series as an assistant and media manager.
The Maple Garden restaurant is located at 909 Isenberg St. The public is invited and lunch is $15. The lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon.
Standup paddle event may start today
After nearly a week of lay days, Standup World Paddle Tour organizers were looking to get the main event of the Sunset Beach Pro started today.
Hawaii’s Duane DeSoto, Jamie O’Brien, Connor Baxter, Keolu Kalama and Kala Alexander are among 16 qualifiers who have advanced into the first round of the tour’s first stop. Maui’s Kai Lenny, the two-time defending world champion, headlines the 24 athletes who have earned spots into the second round.
