With nine former draft picks committed to today’s game, the Hawaii baseball alumni team seems to have the upper hand.
Not so fast says current UH senior Matt Sisto.
“No shot,” he said. “They think they’re good but they’re old. They got a lot of pitchers and no position guys and I don’t think a lot of them are going to throw.”
Fans get their first chance to see the 2012 UH baseball team in the annual alumni game at 1 p.m. today at Les Murakami Stadium.
Sisto will get a shot to pitch against many former teammates, including Kolten Wong, one of six players from last year’s squad scheduled to play.
Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said Sisto would be on a 90-pitch limit in his final tuneup for next week’s opener against Oregon.
A four-year starter, Sisto said he’s got a simple game plan when facing Wong, a first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals last summer.
“I’m going to bean him,” he joked.
Ten of the 16 alumni scheduled to play were pitchers.
Lenny Linsky, who shares the school’s single-season saves record with 13 last season, said he plans on manning one of the outfield spots.
“Hopefully someone tries to run on me because I’m going to gear up on one and try to hose someone,” he said.
Linksy said he’ll handle the pregame lineups while Randy Yard will take care of third-base coaching duties.
Jesse Moore, one of three four-year seniors for the Rainbows, will also likely get a chance to pitch against many of his former teammates.
“They can do all their talking a little bit but we’re just out here to keep getting better every day,” he said. “We’ll have fun out there but we also want to use this as a tuneup for the season and go out there and play well as a team.”
Moore is expected to focus mainly on pitching this year, but if he does get a chance to hit off Linsky, he’ll be ready.
“The first one will probably be at my chin so I’ll probably get out of the way of the first one,” he said. “After that he may get me to about 2-0 or 3-1 and then I’ll probably just close my eyes and swing as hard as I can … hope for the best.”
Jayson Kramer and Alex Capaul will likely handle most of the pitching for the alumni.
“We got Capaul, Kramer and the infamous Harrison Kuroda so we got a really good chance,” Linsky said. “We do have Kolten Wong and if you got Kolten Wong in your lineup, anything is possible.”
