Long Beach State blanks UH in soccer
The growing pains continued for the Hawaii women’s soccer team in a 3-0 loss at Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon.
UH, which dropped to 0-5 for the first time since 1996, was outplayed from the opening kick by the defending Big West Conference tournament champions. Junior Nadia Link netted two scores and assisted on another as the 49ers (4-2) scored twice in the first 15 minutes and never looked back at George Allen Field.
Long Beach State, a regular conference opponent starting next season, dominated in scoring opportunities with a 9-1 edge in shots on goal and eight corner kicks to none for the Rainbow Wahine. UH’s closest opportunity was a shot that went off the crossbar in the first half.
First-year coach Michele Nagamine described it as a "very lackluster performance."
"We were completely off of our game today," Nagamine said. "It was something that I was almost waiting for to happen. We haven’t had, even the North Dakota State (loss), it wasn’t like we played bad, we came back to tie it at 2. … I don’t feel like we had any bad games so far this year (before today). Today was just not our best effort. We were quiet, we looked tired. I think Long Beach came at us pretty hard and really hustled. That combination was deadly for us."
The Rainbow Wahine complete their three-game road swing through California at Saint Mary’s (3-1-1) of the West Coast Conference on Tuesday.
University of Mary edges Chaminade
Alex Bachman-Williams scored in overtime to give the University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.) a 2-1 women’s soccer win over Chaminade in Honolulu.
Bachman-Williams also assisted on Jessica Curl’s goal that broke a scoreless tie for the Marauders (1-1-1) in the 47th minute.
The Silverswords (0-2) made it 1-1 in the 82nd minute on a goal by Amber Bonifacio.
