Detectives are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body near Nakalele Point on the northernmost point on Maui and took a California man into custody Friday after he was airlifted from the rock point below a cliff.
Police said the 38-year-old man jumped off a cliff into the ocean near Nakalele Point after officers tried to question him following a report of a fight between a man and a woman Thursday evening on Kahekili Highway near mile marker 37.
Officers responding to the 6:27 p.m. call saw the man jump into the ocean. Police discovered the woman’s body about an hour later.
The Maui Fire Department and Coast Guard attempted to find the man in the ocean, but the effort was suspended Thursday night.
Friday morning at 6:45 a.m., police were airlifted by helicopter to the point and took the man into custody. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. However, his injuries were not life-threatening.
Police said the man and woman were staying in the same hotel room.
The case is being investigated as a homicide by Maui Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
