State will leave sandbar open after checking radiation levels
The sand bar at Kaneohe Bay will be open this holiday weekend despite concerns raised about low levels of radiation in the area, state Land Board Chairman William Aila said.
Officials from the Indoor and Radiological Health Branch were able to measure only background levels of radiation during a survey of the air from about 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
The environmental health specialists took measurements in the area where a Marine CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter crashed in March.
Environmental watchdog Caroll Cox said Thursday that military officials failed to notify the state or the public about the radiation released as a result of the crash.
