Haleiwa counts 3 brush fires in 2 weeks
For the third time in two weeks, firefighters battled a brush fire near Haleiwa Elementary School.
About 30 firefighters were sent Wednesday to the fire, which prompted police to close a lane on Paalaa Road but threatened no property.
Fire crews with engines, water tankers and a helicopter brought the fire under control about 5:25 p.m., about 100 yards from the nearest home on Aukai Lane.
The fire began about 1:45 p.m. on the mauka side of Haleiwa Road near Paalaa Road, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
Firefighters are seeking witnesses to help determine the cause of the 20-acre blaze. A fire investigator was also following up on reports that a witness saw a man start the fire, Seelig said.
The blaze was next to the site of a 10-acre brush fire that burned part of a noni tree farm on Aug. 15.
A brush fire on Aug. 18 destroyed a small homeless encampment, burned about 12 acres and prompted the evacuation of Haleiwa Elementary School. Fire investigators determined that fire was intentionally set.
