Former Hawaii quarterback and offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich is joining the Nevada football coaching staff in what will be a shotgun marriage of two prolific offenses.
Rolovich was not retained at UH when Norm Chow was hired as head coach in December.
Last month, Rolovich began working at Massachusetts as the offensive coordinator on a “voluntary” basis. Rolovich, who was under contract with UH through March 31, did not sign a contract with UMass.
This past weekend, Nevada head coach Chris Ault offered Rolovich the dual position of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Rolovich reportedly will receive a two-year contract. (UH assistants were limited to one-year deals.)
“At the end of the day,” Rolovich said of accepting the offer, “I’ll have some knowledge I might not be exposed to otherwise.”
For several years, the Wolf Pack have been one of the nation’s leaders in rushing, attacking out of the Ault-created pistol offense. Rolovich has been successful with UH’s version of the run-and-shoot passing offense.
Rolovich said the Pack will continue to run the pistol while “incorporating some elements of the run-and-shoot. There’s no way you can go 100 percent with the pistol or 100 percent with the run-and-shoot.”
Rolovich said it was “difficult” to leave UMass.
“I felt for my career and my family, the opportunity (at Nevada) was too good to pass up,” Rolovich said.
He said he expects his return to Aloha Stadium this fall will be emotional. Nevada and UH are joining the Mountain West Conference this summer.
“Hawaii is always going to be a special part of my life and my life story,” he said.
