Park takes medalist honors in qualifying
Professional Jun Won Park shot 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to earn medalist honors in the qualifying round for this week’s 34th annual Hawaii Pearl Open. Park was two shots better than professional Jae Ho Kim and Japanese amateur Fumiya Iwahashi.
The top 35 in the field of 56 at Pearl Country Club advanced to Friday’s first round. That includes Hawaii’s Allisen Corpuz and Brittany Fan, who both shot 78. They will join pro Mari Chun and state high school champion Eimi Koga as the only females in the tournament field of 176.
The tournament tees off at 7:10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The field will be cut to the low 72 and ties for the final round, with the top 15 amateurs guaranteed a place Sunday.
San Jose’s John Ellis will defend his title.
UHH, Cal State Stanislaus split in softball
Emily Greene and Angeline Cruz homered and Ashley Nelson pitched 42⁄3 innings of winning relief to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 7-4 victory in the first game of a softball doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus on Tuesday in Hilo.
The Warriors (4-5) came back for a 7-5 win in the second game, thanks in part to Kiley Mendez’s three RBIs.
Bryanna Hardy and Amanda Nazario had two hits apiece for the Vulcans (1-1) in the second game.
