2 hikes reopen off Chain of Craters Road
Hawaii National Park, Hawaii » Two popular hiking trails within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park have reopened for day use only.
The Napau and Naulu trails were closed Aug. 3 to access any hazards caused by a new eruption along the west flank of Kilauea’s Puu Oo vent, according to a statement from the park.
Both trails begin at points off Chain of Craters Road and end at Napau Campsite, which remains closed to overnight campers.
Hikers must register at either Kilauea Visitor Center (open daily from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.) or at new registration boxes at the trails. Hikers must list their names, cellphone numbers and start and finish times. For details about the trails and how to prepare, visit www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/hike_napau.htm.
