The remnants of former Tropical Storm Fernanda were about 425 miles east-southeast of Hilo this morning and forecasters say there is nearly no chance that the system will regenerate into a tropical cyclone as it passes south of the islands this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said today that the remnants of Fernanda are now showers and isolated thunderstorms which are expected to pass south of the islands Sunday and Monday.

Moisture from the system may reach the Big Island beginning tonight, leading to locally heavy showers through Monday morning for windward areas of the Big Island, forecasters said.

Trade winds will weaken a bit Monday through Thursday of next week and there is the possibility of showers statewide, particularly on Sunday and Monday, as Fernanda’s remnants pass to the south, they said. Showers are expected to be focused on windward sides of all islands.

Fernanda entered the Central Pacific Thursday as a strong tropical storm, but quickly dissipated as it moved over cooler waters.
