Campbell’s Justin Tago floated a pass high and toward the corner of the end zone. It seemed like the ball was in the air for an eternity.
On the other end, Keoni Piceno went up, caught it and kept his feet just inbounds.
The Tago-to-Piceno connection for an 8-yard touchdown gave host Campbell a 21-14 overtime victory over No. 9 Waianae in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West game Friday night at Campbell.
“That’s one of our favorite plays,”Sabers coach Amosa Amosa said of the winning touchdown. “We run that a lot in practice. Justin did a good job of throwing the ball in an area where the receiver was supposed to be, and Keoni made a spectacular catch.”
Tago was hit as he released the ball and didn’t see Piceno make the catch.
“Iput it in God’s hands right when the ball went up,”Tago said. “Iwas on the ground hoping he caught it.”
The Sabers had the ball at the 20 to start overtime. On the fifth play of the drive, Tago, a left-hander, rolled to his left and lobbed the ball back across the field for Piceno in the end zone. Piceno made a spectacular leaping grab just within the right sideline.
“That was over the shoulder in the corner of the end zone,”Piceno said. “It was the toughest catch you can make.”
Jaelen Subia-Etrata’s PAT gave Campbell a 21-14 lead.
Waianae gained just 1 yard on its overtime possession.
With 37 seconds left in regulation, Campbell (2-0, 1-0 Red West) had a chance to win it, but a 41-yard field-goal attempt was short and wide left.
Waianae tied it at 14 on a 30-yard pass from Kekoa Kaluhiokalani to Jason Towne with 2:14 remaining in regulation, followed by Shaughn Spencer’s PAT.
On the previous series, Campbell took the lead with 5:01 remaining on Aries Pihi’s 28-yard run up the middle and Tago’s 2-point conversion run.
Waianae (0-2, 0-1) scored on the game’s opening possession with a four-play, 67-yard drive. Kaluhiokalani completed a 46-yard pass to Towne, putting the ball at the Sabers’ 6.
Two plays later, Lyman Peeples plunged in from 1 yard out, just 44 seconds in. Spencer’s PAT made it 7-0.
Campbell answered with 5:36 remaining in the first period on a 34-yard pass from Tago to BJ Halmos, who got behind the defense down the right side. The PAT bounced off the left upright.
The Seariders had an opportunity to score midway through the third period after Cleghorn Borge recovered a muffed punt at the Campbell 9. Waianae lost 4 yards on three plays, and a pass on a fake field goal fell incomplete.
