HPU sweeps Pacific Lutheran in softball
Melissa Awa doubled in Breanne Patton with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Hawaii Pacific beat Pacific Lutheran 5-4 to complete a sweep of a doubleheader Saturday at Howard Okita Field.
In the first game, Patton allowed two unearned runs in a complete-game performance as HPU beat Pacific Lutheran 5-2.
Patton allowed five hits, walked four and struck out five.
Chante Tesoro tripled in two runs during HPU’s four-run second inning.
HPU improved to 2-0; Pacific Lutheran dropped to 1-3.
Trapasso, Coolen to speak at QB Club
University of Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso and softball coach Bob Coolen will be the featured speakers at Monday’s weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at Maple Garden restaurant.
Trapasso’s team opens the regular season at home Feb. 17 against Oregon. The Rainbow Wahine open the regular season Feb. 9 against Seattle in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.
The restaurant is located at 909 Isenberg St. The lunch, which costs $15, starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program is at noon. The public is invited.
UH wins 1 and loses 1 in water polo
Danielle Lewis scored three goals and Emily Scott added a pair as the No. 10 University of Hawaii women’s water polo team beat Michigan 7-5 at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday at Stanford, Calif.
Earlier in the day, No. 4 UCLA edged Hawaii 6-5.
Lopes da Silva and Emily Scott each scored twice and Amarens Genee added one for the Rainbow Wahine, who led 5-4 entering the fourth period. Serena Reid had nine saves.
Dixie State trips BYUH in basketball
Becca Thomas scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Dixie State to an 89-72 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in a Pacific West Conference women’s basketball game Saturday in Laie.
Shayla Washington had 23 points, five steals and eight rebounds for the Seasiders (3-15, 2-8). Dixie State is 14-5 and 9-2.
Grand Canyon drops UHH women
Jallisa Butler had 14 points and 18 rebounds as Grand Canyon defeated Hawaii-Hilo 65-59 in women’s basketball Saturday in Hilo.
Kirsty Imai had 19 points to lead the Vulcans (8-11, 5-6 PacWest). GCU is 17-2 and 9-2.
Cal Baptist routs Chaminade in hoops
Simone Holmes collected 20 points, six rebounds and five assists to power Cal Baptist to an 82-61 victory over Chaminade in women’s basketball Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Kelly Costello had 15 points for the Silverswords (0-16, 0-10). Cal Baptist is 16-3 and 9-2.
Dixie State comes back to beat BYUH men
Griffon Jones scored 16 points, Solomon Jensen added 15 and Dalton Groskreutz had 13 as Dixie State rallied past Brigham Young-Hawaii 70-69 in a men’s basketball showdown Saturday at Cannon Activities Center.
Jake Dastrup scored 22 points, Jet Chang added 16, and Bracken Funk had 14 points and 11 rebounds for BYU-Hawaii, which led 37-28 at halftime.
Dixie State, which won its eighth straight, improved to 15-4 and 10-1 in the PacWest, while BYU-Hawaii dropped to 8-2 and 11-8.
Cal Baptist runs past Chaminade men
Ivan Patterson scored 22 points, and Justus Von Wright had 19 points and nine rebounds as California Baptist beat Chaminade 72-63 in a men’s game Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Bennie Murray scored 19 points, and Matt Cousins added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Chaminade, which went on a 17-0 run for a 49-44 lead with 12:45 remaining. Dominique Cooks contributed 11 points and seven assists.
Cal Baptist responded with a 20-8 run for a 64-57 advantage with 2:33 remaining.
Cal Baptist improved to 15-3 and 9-2 in the PacWest, while Chaminade dropped to 9-8 and 7-3.
Grand Canyon upends UHH men
Kyle Speed and Jerome Garrison scored 17 points each as Grand Canyon cruised by Hawaii-Hilo 84-71 in men’s basketball Saturday in Hilo.
Terrell Mack had a game-high 18 points for the Vulcans, 7-12 and 1-10 in the PacWest. GCU is 12-7 and 6-5.
