Several Pacific fans dressed as Hawaii coach Charlie Wade for Friday night’s volleyball match.
But it was Hawaii’s Steven Hunt and Nick West who were dressed to kill in the Warriors’ 24-26, 22-25, 25-19, 27-25, 15-11 victory at the Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif.
Hunt, a senior left-side hitter, slammed a match-high 25 kills, and West, a sophomore middle who transferred from UC Irvine, contributed 12 kills and hit .429.
The Warriors have won 39 of the 40 matches between the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents. They have won 30 consecutive matches in this series, dating to April 1997, including 15 in a row in Spanos.
"It was nice to pick up a conference win on the road," Wade said. The rematch is tonight.
The Warriors, who improved to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the MPSF, faced an early exit when they blew leads to lose the first two sets and then fell behind 17-12 in the fourth set.
Thanks to Hunt’s serves — he had a run of four in a row — the Warriors rallied in the fourth set. It was tied at 25 when UH’s other left-side hitter, J.P. Marks, crushed a line shot. Hunt’s ensuing kill forced the first-to-15 fifth set.
"We were down with what turned out to be a pretty good margin," Wade said. "We steadied out and made some nice plays."
The Tigers adjusted their rotation to align four passers when Hunt was serving in the fifth set. But that allowed the Warriors to construct their block. They had five blocks in the final set. Two of the Tigers’ first four swings were rejected.
The Warriors had leads of 3-0 and 6-2 before the Tigers chipped away. The Tigers closed to 13-11 after Marks hit long.
On the next play, Marks made a diving save. UH libero Nick Castello then sent a back set 30 feet to Hunt at the left pin. Hunt’s crossing shot extended the UH lead to 14-11.
UH middle Jarrod Lofy then blocked Sean Daley for aloha point.
"Once we got them to commit to the scouting report, they did a nice job together," said Wade, referring to the Warriors’ 17 blocks. West had eight block assists, and setter Sam Biscaro contributed to nine rejections.
Hunt suffered from flu-like symptoms when the Warriors arrived in town on Wednesday night.
"He was pretty toast," Wade said.
Hunt had a light practice on Thursday, and did not participate in Friday morning’s serving session.
"At game time, he was ready," Wade said, "and he played great."
Taylor Hughes led the Tigers with 22 kills.
