Honolulu’s inflation rate climbs 3.5 percent in first half of 2011

Honolulu’s inflation rate accelerated during the first half of this year due in large part to rising electricity and gasoline prices, according to a report released today.

The Consumer Price Index rose 3.5 percent during the January-through-June period compared with the same six months a year earlier, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. That was up from calendar year 2010 when Honolulu’s inflation rate rose by 2.1 percent.

Among the index components,  electricity prices rose by 19.5 percent in the first half of this year, while gasoline prices increased 17.8 percent.

Food and beverage costs rose by 2.6 percent, medical care costs were up 2 percent and the cost of shelter rose by 1.9 percent, according to the report.
