No. 1 Texas maintains lead at Waikoloa
Texas, the No. 1 team in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, shot a 1-under 287 on Thursday to remain in the lead after the second round of the University of Hawaii-Hilo’s 22nd annual Amer Ari Intercollegiate at Waikoloa Kings’.
The Longhorns, who led by five strokes after the first round, are at 19-under-par 557. UCLA is three strokes back and USC is four back.
Hawaii shot its second consecutive 2-over 290 and is 14th at 583. Hawaii-Hilo is tied for 17th at 585.
UCLA’s Pontus Widegren shot a second-round 69 and leads by one stroke at 9-under 135. Stanford’s Patrick Rogers, USC’s Jeffrey Kang and Texas’ Toni Hakula are one back.
Hawaii’s TJ Kua shot the low round of the day — a 4-under 68 — and is tied for sixth at 6-under 138. Hilo’s top golfer is Blake Snyder, who is tied for 30th at 1-under 143.
UH women drop water polo opener
The University of Hawaii women’s water polo team dropped its season opener Thursday, losing to No. 2 California 8-5 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Berkeley, Calif.
Monique Wilson scored two goals for the No. 10 Rainbow Wahine (0-1, 0-1 MPSF). Serena Reid made eight saves.
California (9-0, 1-0) got three goals from Breda Vosters. The Golden Bears led 4-1 after the first period.
Cal Baptist beats BYUH women 71-59
Myriah Hicks scored 20 points and Simone Holmes added 17 as visiting California Baptist beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 71-59 in a Pacific West Conference women’s basketball game Thursday.
Shayla Washington scored 18 points, Danna Lynn Hooper added 12 and Taylor Mann had 11 for BYUH.
Cal Baptist improved to 15-3, 8-2; BYUH fell to 3-14, 2-7.
