A day after the Major League Baseball deadline for draft picks to sign with their professional teams passed, recruit Nick Carmichael informed Hawaii coaches that he would not enroll at UH this year.
A 17th-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles, Carmichael will instead remain at Palomar (Calif.) Junior College.
He’s the second recruit the Rainbows lost in a 24-hour span. Former Green Valley (Nev.) High School infielder Brett Harrison signed with the Detroit Tigers in the final hour before Monday’s deadline.
Carmichael appeared in 18 games for the Comets in 2011, going 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 321⁄3 innings. He was pegged as a potential replacement for closer Lenny Linsky, a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Carmichael committed to the Rainbows after June’s draft.
UH has lost three commits and four juniors to this year’s draft after losing a total of eight in 2010.
Right-hander Connor Little, a 49th-round selection by the Florida Marlins, said on Tuesday he will return for his senior year.
Kailua’s Alan Baldwin, a UH commit drafted in the same round by the Rays, has also decided not to sign and will play at UH.
