Vice President Joe Biden will stop in Hawaii Aug. 25 and deliver a speech to Kaneohe Bay Marines as he returns from a nine-day Asian trip.
White House officials said Biden will arrive the morning of Aug. 25, speak at the Marine base and leave that evening for Washington, D.C. No other details of his stopover were released; Marine Corps officials at Kaneohe provided no further information.
It will be Biden’s first trip to the islands as vice president, although officials here said he made many Hawaii trips as a U.S. senator.
Beijing is Biden’s first stop on a trip to China, Mongolia and Japan. He will meet with key leaders in each nation to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues, the White House said.
Biden left for China Tuesday at the invitation of Vice President Xi Jinping. While in Beijing, Biden will meet with Xi and other Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.
Biden will also visit the city of Chengdu in southwestern China.
On Sunday he will deliver a speech on U.S.-Chinese relations at Sichuan University.
He will then travel to Dujiangyan, a city in Sichuan province that was severely damaged in the May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. In Dujiangyan, Biden and Xi will meet with students at the rebuilt Qingchengshan High School.
Biden will fly to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on Monday and meet with Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold and President Tsakhia Elbegdorj. Biden also will attend a cultural demonstration of traditional Mongolian sports.
In Japan, Biden will meet with Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Tuesday and then travel to Sendai, which was hardest hit by the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear emergency.
The following day, Aug. 24, Biden will visit with U.S. Embassy staff and families in Tokyo and then travel to Yokota Air Base, headquarters of U.S. Forces Japan, to recognize U.S. service members for their efforts in delivering relief supplies, assisting in search and rescue efforts, providing specialized technical assistance and helping restore local infrastructure.
In the evening, Biden will leave Yokota Air Base for Hawaii.
