UH men’s basketball team moves to 3-1 against Chinese teams
BENXI, China >> Forward Hauns Brereton and point guard Shaquille Stokes scored 21 points each and the Hawaii men’s basketball team rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to defeat Shenyang of the Chinese Basketball Association 72-71 today.
With the win before about 4,000 fans at Benxi Gymnasium, Hawaii improved to 3-1 against CBA teams on its Warriors to Asia tour. One game remains, an exhibition against the Panasonic Trians of the Japan Basketball League in Osaka on Saturday.
UH trailed 48-30 at the half and looked stumped by the Panpan Dinosaurs’ drive-and-kick game. But the Rainbow Warriors made some defensive adjustments and went on a 20-5 run to start the third quarter. They went ahead for good on a Joston Thomas three-point play near the start of the fourth period, but needed to weather several late chances by the hosts.
The Rainbows, up by a point with time expiring, survived with a defensive stop on Shenyang star point guard Gao Ai Lun, who couldn’t get an attempt off as he drove into the teeth of the UH defense.
