State senator organizes effort to replenish sand at Makaha Surfing Beach
State Sen. Maile Shimabukuro is organizing a plan to restore sand next week at the west end of Makaha Surfing Beach, which has been eroding for years.
Shimabukuro said in a statement Monday that it’s important to prevent erosion to preserve one of the world’s most famous surfing beaches. She says she’s working on a long-term solution to systematically address the erosion problem.
The project aims to prevent the recurring erosion of sand along the base of the roadway, ensure public safety, and protect existing vegetation.
City workers next Monday are due to use heavy equipment to move sand from several parts of the beach to replenish about 3,800 cubic yards of erosion.
State Department of Land and Natural Resources officials, students and community members are also helping out.
