Hawaii bankruptcies fell in January for 11th straight month

The number of people filing for bankruptcy in Hawaii fell in January for the eleventh month in a row, according to data published today by U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

There were 212 filings in January, down 13.5 percent from the 305 cases filed the same month a year ago, The number of new filings has declined on a year-over-year basis in every month since March 2010, when filings rose by a statistically insignificant 0.3 percent.

The biggest decline in filings occurred in Hawaii County where the number of cases fell to 24 in January from 39 a year earlier, a decline of 38.5 percent. Filings fell to 12 from 16 in Kauai County, a decline of 25 percent. In Maui County filings fell by 24.5 percent to 37 from 49. Filings in Honolulu County fell to 139 from 141, a decline of 1.4 percent.
