New deputy human services director is appointed
Gov. Neil Abercrombie is appointing Barbara Yamashita the deputy director the state Department of Human Services.
Yamashita most recently was chief of the Department of Health’s maternal and child health branch, where she provided led and oversaw programs on child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence and other programs.
The governor said in a statement Tuesday he’s confident Yamashita’s extensive knowledge and practical experience in social work and other issues will be invaluable as the state strengthens “Hawaii’s safety net for those who most need it.”
She fills the vacancy left by Pankaj Bhanot, who has returned to his previous position as chief administrator of the Department of Human Services’ benefits, employment and support services division.
