“911 call”

Police have released tapes of the 911 calls made after a fatal H-1 freeway crash that killed Honolulu police officer Garret Davis.

The recording contained six calls to dispatchers on Jan. 21 with several reporting large flames.

One man saw the police car get hit, and people getting out of their cars on the freeway to help.

“I saw the police car get hit,” the man said. “He stopped over to help a guy I guess who was stalled in the lefthand fast lane. His lights were on, and I guess someone didn’t stop quick enough, and they just slammed into him. There’s a huge fire on the freeway.

“I don’t know if anyone’s OK or not, but people are out there trying to put the fire out right now.

“I saw both cars get hit, the truck that was in the front and the blue-and-white got hit. There was somebody in the car,” he said.

Davis was assigned to the Wahiawa substation and was delivering paperwork to the main headquarters on Beretania Street when he stopped in the far, lefthand lane of the eastbound, H-1 freeway at the Kaonohi Street overpass in Aiea to help a 32-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman in a stalled vehicle, police said.

He had turned on the blue lights to his patrol car when he was allegedly struck from behind by a 41-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Silverado, police said.

Davis, 28, graduated from the HPD academy in 2008. He grew up in Folsom, Calif.
