Visitor nearly drowns off Magic Island
A 41-year-old visitor from Japan was hospitalized Sunday following a near-drowning incident off Magic Island.
The woman was apparently participating in a scuba class when the incident occurred. Emergency Medical Services personnel transported her in critical condition to an area hospital.
Lost hikers rescued from trail on Kauai
A father and son from Minnesota who became lost while hiking in Kokee, Kauai, were airlifted to safety Friday by the Kauai Fire Department.
The two called 911 at 4:54 p.m. after hiking about three miles on what they believed to be "Ditch Trail," Kauai County officials said in a news release.
The 49-year-old man and his 21-year-old son were disoriented and unable to find their way back, officials said, but the hikers had a GPS device and were able to relay their coordinates to dispatch. The department’s helicopter located the hikers at 5:57 p.m.
Man caught taking copper from school
Police arrested a 29-year-old Waianae man for allegedly trying to steal copper from Waianae Elementary School.
A witness reported seeing the suspect cutting off copper rain gutters at the school on Friday. Responding officers arrested the man after a brief foot chase.
