Grant to aid schools with health program
A $40,000 grant to promote student health was awarded to the state Department of Education on Monday by Kaiser Permanente Hawaii.
Education officials say the money will help schools apply for HealthierUS School Challenge certification, a voluntary initiative by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food and nutrition services.
The certification recognizes schools for making significant changes to aspects of school health, including food, nutrition education and physical activity.
As of October there were more than 2,000 certified schools nationwide, none in Hawaii.
