Makawao man dies in pickup truck crash
Maui police suspect speed and alcohol contributed to a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning that killed a Makawao man.
Cody Endo, 20, was driving a raised 1994 Toyota pickup with oversized and extended wheels toward Makawao on Kekaulike Highway in Kula when he lost control about 12:20 a.m., police said. The truck hit a guardrail, climbed an embankment, launched into the air and overturned, landing on its roof in the back yard of a Palena Place house.
Endo was not wearing a seat belt and was partially thrown from the truck, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died at 7:10 p.m.

The boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
Baton-wielding man attempts robbery
A 19-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly used a baton in attempting to rob two men in Waikiki.
Police said the victims, 18 and 21, were walking in Waikiki about 3:20 a.m. when the assailant approached and asked for a cigarette.
When the younger man refused, the assailant accused him of calling him a name and assaulted him, and the older victim intervened, police said.
As the two men were walking away, the attacker allegedly wielded a baton and demanded money from the older man.
A witness flagged down an officer and the man, of no local address, was arrested at the corner of Kaiulani Avenue and Prince Edward Street for investigation of robbery, assault and possession of a deadly weapon.
