Duke’s OceanFest coming up

The 10th Duke’s OceanFest, celebrating sports in which Hawaii’s first Olympian Duke Kahanamoku excelled, runs Aug. 21-28 in Waikiki.

The event kicks off with the Hawaii Waterman’s Hall of Fame induction at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Aug. 21. This year’s class includes navigator Nainoa Thompson; the late Aileen Riggins Soule, a two-time Olympian in diving and swimming; big-wave surfer Peter Cole; and the late Ethel Kukea, a pioneer in women’s surfing.

Kahanamoku’s 121st birthday on Aug. 24 will be marked with a sunrise service at his statue on Kuhio Beach. Competition begins later that day with tandem surfing, longboard surfing and the first Access Surf competition for challenged athletes.

Other competitions during the week include stand-up paddleboard racing, outrigger canoe surfing, beach volleyball, paddleboarding, surfboard water polo and a 1-mile ocean swim. The OceanFest concludes with the multi-sport Kahala Challenge, an 800-meter swim, 2-mile beach run and choice of a 2-mile paddleboard, 2-mile stand-up paddleboard or 2.5-mile OC-1 course.

HulaCross on Sunday at Kalaloa

HulaCross, an extreme offroad event combining time attack and wheel-to-wheel racing, is scheduled for Sunday at the Kalaeloa Raceway Park.

The day will also include motocross races.

Former NBA player at clinic next week

Lucius Allen, who won an NBA championship during a 10-year career, headlines a basketball skills clinic Aug. 20 at Kalaheo High.

The clinic for ages 7-17 is put on by the Kailua Community Basketball League and runs from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The cost is $20 (cash only) at the gym.
