Calif. woman won’t get jail for feeding bears

MENDOCINO, Calif. >> A woman who turned her rural Northern California home into a spa for wild bears won’t go to jail.

The San Francisco Chronicle says Lynne Gravier of Laytonville pleaded guilty Monday in Mendocino County to a misdemeanor charge of feeding big game. However, prosecutors agreed to drop the charge in three years if Gravier agrees to stop her bear feeding.

Gravier says she’s glad it’s over.

The 77-year-old woman set out a wading pool and bought thousands of pounds of food to feed her guests with corn meal and peanut butter sandwiches.

Neighbors complained that the bears broke into their homes and killed livestock. Last year, authorities found 15 black bears at Gravier’s home. The filthy house was condemned and Gravier now lives elsewhere.
