Confrontation leads to fatal stabbing in Waikiki

A 20-year-old Kaneohe man was stabbed to death in Waikiki early this morning following a confrontation over a stolen bag.

According to Honolulu police, the victim and a group of friends were walking near the concession area of Queen’s Surf around 2:25 a.m. when they stole a bag and ran to their car, which was parked nearby. They were confronted by the owner of the bag and in the ensuing argument the victim allegedly struck the owner of the bag.

The owner of the bag allegedly stabbed the victim and another man before fleeing.

Both victims were taken to a hospital, where the 20-year-old man was pronounced dead. The other victim was treated and released.

The suspect, a 39-year-old man with no local address, was located a few blocks away on Kalakaua Avenue and arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, second-degree assault and resisting arrest, as well as a contempt violation.

The suspect has prior convictions for third-degree assault and fourth-degree assault, both misdemeanors, as well as five alcohol-related misdemeanors.
