'CARNAGE' OPENS AT MVT | 1. Director Vanita Rae Smith, center, celebrated with Manoa Valley Theatre cast members Dwight T. Martin, left, Brenda-Lee Hillebrenner, Tricia Marciel and Stu Hirayama at the opening-night reception for MVT's production of "God of Carnage" Jan. 12 in Manoa. The dialogue and subject matter are far removed from the G-rated classic musicals Smith presented during most of her long reign at Army Community Theatre, but she and her cast have brought the Tony Award-winning drama to the MVT stage with all the titular carnage intact.

'HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LIANA!' | 4. Liana Ortiz Green Wright switched from tears to smiles when she discovered the "family emergency" her husband, Matt Wright, had told her about was only an excuse to get her to an elaborate surprise birthday party Jan. 14 at Haiku Plantation. She got a second surprise much later in the evening when Kalei Andrade, right, one of her best friends from college, arrived at the party after catching a late flight from the Big Island.

2. Diamond Head Theatre staff member Vincent Green, left, congratulated MVT director's assistant Polly Miao and sound designer Jason Taglianetti. Taglianetti, who has won five Po'okela Awards for sound design, said it was surprisingly time-consuming to create exactly the sound he wanted for one character's annoying cellphone buzz tone.
