Chan 5 back at Junior PGA Championship
‘Iolani senior Lorens Chan goes into today’s final round of the 36th Junior PGA Championship five shots off the lead. Chan, a two-time Hawaii state high school champion, fired an even-par 72 Thursday and is alone in fourth after three rounds, at 2-under 214.
Cody Proveaux, a high school senior from South Carolina, moved into the lead with a 67.
Ariya Jutanugarn, a sophomore from Thailand, takes a 10-shot lead into the final round of the girls division. Maui’s Cassy Isagawa, the defending champion, is tied for ninth after shooting a third-round 75.
Jutanugarn, who shot a 66, is at 13-under 203. Isagawa’s 54-hole total is 222.
Allisen Corpuz, an eighth-grader from Honolulu, has a share of 13th at 75—224. Moanalua junior Eimi Koga, the state high school champion, is 23rd at 74—228. All three Hawaii girls easily made the 54-hole cut of 234.
In other national events:
» Makawao’s Alex Chiarella closed with an even-par 72 to finish tied for 19th at the 43rd Big "I" National Championship at Reunion Golf & Country Club in Mississippi. Chiarella had a four-day total of 296. The winner was J.T. Poston, from North Carolina, at 72—282.
» Honolulu’s Alex Ching did not advance to match play after firing 76 in both the third and fourth rounds Thursday at the 109th Western Open in Illinois. The top 16 advanced to match play. After making the 36-hole cut, Ching finished 56th. The University of San Diego senior now waits to find out if he will be selected to the U.S. Walker Cup team. He was one of 16 golfers invited by the USGA to a practice session in January. The Walker Cup, played next month in Scotland, is the amateur version of the Ryder Cup.
Top 4 seeds advance at Night Doubles
After a week of qualifying and this week’s early rounds of the main draw, the four top-seeded teams remain at the 41st Blue Moon Men’s Night Doubles.
Tonight at 6 at Kailua Racquet Club, second-seeded Ikaika Jobe and Thomas Shubert play third-seeded Hendrik Bode and Stefan Pampulov. When that match is over, top-seeded Mikael Maatta and Jan Axel Tribler play fourth-seeded Michael Wojnarowicz and Bradlee Lum-Tucker.
In Wednesday’s final quarterfinal matches, Bode and Pampulov — the new and former Hawaii Pacific coaches — swept sixth-seeded Alex Aybar and Matt Westmoreland, 6-1, 6-1. Jobe and Shubert took out eighth-seeded Daniel Adachi and Jeff Fitch, 6-3, 6-2.
There were no matches Thursday, which was scheduled as a rain date.
The championship is Saturday at approximately 7 p.m., following a 6 p.m. playoff for third.
