The Kapolei Hurricanes picked a heck of a time to finally beat Farrington.
Paige Kaea scored 11 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter as the ’Canes pulled away for a 50-33 win over Farrington.
Kapolei (13-6 overall, 9-3 league) advanced into the double-elimination tier of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red (Division I) playoffs. Farrington, which beat Kapolei in last year’s league final, closed the season at 7-5 in league play (8-7 overall).
Most of Kaea’s points came in transition. She also hustled for eight of her team-high 10 rebounds on the offensive glass. Toe Motu, playing with a cold, added 15 points and eight boards. It was a demonstration of great complementary play for Kapolei, which got seven steals from Chermayne Yago, six assists from Anna Jean Souza and five boards from center Alisha Gipson.
The constant defensive pressure, however, was Kapolei’s trump card in a first-ever win over the Govs.
“That’s what we do best,” said Kaea, who had four of her team’s 19 steals. “All the running and defense we did in practice is showing in the game. We’re learning to be disciplined and not reach. If they’re coming out weak, you know the right time to pressure on the ball.”
A hearty crowd of about 500 saw the home team control the paint, outrebounding Farrington 34-18. The ’Canes also used full-court on-ball pressure to force the visitors into 27 turnovers.
“They did fine. They wanted a win and it showed,” Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu said of the Hurricanes.
Kaea, Yago and Souza were nonstop aggressive on defense from one sideline to the other before coach Jesse Baugh sat his starters with less than 2 minutes remaining.
Early on, though, Farrington’s halfcourt and three-quarter traps seemed to puzzle Kapolei. The ’Canes committed 16 first-half turnovers as Baugh implored his team to execute.
“We had to do what we practice, what we prepared for,” Baugh said. “They got away from what we worked on. We knew those traps were coming.”
Leading 20-16 at the break, the Hurricanes went on a 25-6 run. Gipson scored two quick buckets underneath and Yago, who had three offensive boards to go with her thefts, hit a layup. After Motu scored on a post turnaround, Kapolei had a 31-20 lead and Tatupu called a timeout.
“We were too excited. After our halftime talk, we picked it up,” said Motu, who is playing more on the perimeter offensively this season. “We knew what we had to do, pick it up. We wanted this.”
The Hurricanes blew through Farrington’s adjustments and substitution efforts. Fotu and Kaea combined for the next 12 points as the defensive pressure turned into a blur of steals and breakaway 2-on-1 layups. After Yago fed Kaea for another easy bucket, the ’Canes led 45-22 early in the fourth quarter.
The Govs got no closer than 17 the rest of the way.
“Once we settled down and did what we were supposed to do, we did OK,” Baugh said. “The third quarter was excellent. We pressured the ball, we got turnovers and that just increased our lead.”
