Big Island brush fire jumps highway, burns 90 acres
Hawaii County firefighters remained on scene overnight mopping up hotspots and monitoring a brush fire that burned 80 acres near Ninoole Loop in Punaluu.
The fire jumped Highway 11, burning about 5 acres on the other side of the road before being mostly contained.
The fire closed the highway from about 4 hours until the road was reopened at about 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The fire department reports the blaze is 90 percent contained early this morning. It started at about 2 p.m. The fire department helicopter and a county bulldozer helped contain the blaze. State highway workers also assisted.
