A 56-year-old Haleiwa man was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon when he allegedly disregarded a yield sign and crashed his mo-ped into a pickup truck, police said.

A 2002 silver Toyota Tacoma, driven by a 62-year-old Wahiawa man, was heading into Haleiwa from the intersection of Kamehameha and Joseph P. Leong highways.

Police said the mo-ped operator disregarded a yield sign and crashed into the truckbed on the rear, driver’s side at 3:02 p.m.

The moped rider was taken in critical condition to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he died from head and bodily injuries, police said.

The accident occurred on Kamehameha Highway, one-eighth of a mile west of Joseph P. Leong Highway.

Police said the moped rider was not wearing a helmet.
