Indoor marijuana farm may have caused house fire
BEN LOMOND, Calif. >> Investigators say a blaze that gutted a Santa Cruz Mountains home and killed two dogs may have been caused by an indoor marijuana farm.
Fire Chief Stacie Brownlee says a man and woman who lived in the large Ben Lomond home with their 4-year-old son escaped the flames and didn’t stay to talk with firefighters.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel says the fire started at about 10:50 p.m. Monday and wasn’t extinguished until about 3:30 a.m.
The cause appears to be related to a pot grow on the two-story home’s lower level. Brownlee says an indoor irrigation and electrical system crowded most of the first floor.
Firefighters rescued a cat from an upstairs bedroom but a golden retriever and a bull terrier mix were found dead in the home.
