Chris Demarest has been named special teams coordinator and defensive assistant, filling the last assistant coach’s position on the Hawaii football staff.
In addition, Inoke Funaki and Bobby Gray have been named graduate assistants.
Demarest coached defensive backs at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) in 2011. He previously coached at Florida State, North Carolina State and Rutgers.
Demarest and UH head coach Norm Chow were on the North Carolina State coaching staff in 2000.
"I’ve known Chris since our days at North Carolina State, and I saw what an outstanding recruiter he is," Chow said in a news release. "I’ve followed his career, and we’ve both kept in touch throughout the years. He’ll be a great asset to our staff."
Demarest arrived in Honolulu on Monday. His first day in the office was Tuesday.
Demarest succeeds Dick Tomey, who will not be retained after his one-year contract expires on March 31.
Funaki is a former Kahuku High and UH quarterback. He was hired as a UH graduate assistant in January 2010. GA positions are awarded on one-year terms, with a maximum of three terms.
"I’m stoked to remain on the staff," said Funaki, who is on schedule to earn a master’s degree in public administration in May.
During the transition period between Greg McMackin’s departure and Chow’s hiring, Funaki received a waiver that allowed him to recruit. With the hiring of a full-time staff, Funaki no longer recruits.
Funaki said he has been told he will work on defense. It is a familiar approach for Chow, who encourages his coaches to learn different positions. Chow was an offensive lineman who earned a reputation as a quarterback coach.
Gray is a former McKinley High head coach. He will be an offensive GA.
Chow will hire two student assistant coaches in August.
He also is close to finalizing the hirings of a director of football operations and administrative assistant.
