A 25-year-old Oklahoma woman was killed Friday morning, and her husband was hospitalized in serious condition following a motorcycle-truck accident that closed all Kaneohe-bound lanes of Likelike Highway for three hours.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Kristin Widner of Shawnee, Okla., which is east of Oklahoma City. She was a passenger on the motorcycle.
She was thrown from a blue 2011 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when it was struck by a truck driven by a 57-year-old Kaneohe man. The accident happened at 4:40 a.m. about one-tenth of a mile south of the Wilson Tunnel.
Her husband, J.D. Widner, 27, was the driver of the motorcycle and was in serious condition at the Queen’s Medical Center.
Police arrested the driver of the brown 1994 pickup truck for investigation of negligent homicide and negligent injury.
The Oklahoman newspaper in Oklahoma City said J.D. Widner is a high school softball coach.
Police said the motorcycle was in front of the pickup truck when the truck hit a guardrail and veered into the motorcycle from behind. The visitors from Oklahoma were thrown from their motorcycle, police said.
It was the 30th traffic fatality this year, compared with 36 at this time last year.
The Kaneohe-bound lanes of the highway were closed at Valley View Drive on the Honolulu side of the Wilson Tunnel at about 5 a.m. while police investigated the crash. The lanes were reopened at 8:14 a.m.
The same portion of the highway was closed for three hours Thursday morning after a stolen car, traveling on the wrong side of Likelike Highway, crashed into a police cruiser near Wilson Street while its driver tried to evade police.
The driver of the stolen Lexus remained at large Friday while a passenger in the car was charged with stealing the vehicle.
