Lewis outlasts Hawaii in volleyball in 5 sets

Senior hitter Steven Hunt put down 17 kills to lead three Hawaii players in double-figure kills but it was not enough as No. 9 Lewis held off No. 13 Hawaii 25-21, 25-11, 16-25, 23-25, 15-11 tonight in the 18th Outrigger Hotels Volleyball Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Freshman hitter JP Marks added a career-high 14 kills and freshman middle Nick West 10 for the Warriors (2-2, 1-1 OHVI) over the 2 hours and 47 minutes. Senior libero Nick Castello finished with a match-high 13 digs for Hawaii, which will take on No. 3 UCLA in Saturday’s second match.

The Bruins (4-1, 2-0), the only undefeated team in the tournament, clinched their seventh Outrigger title with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 victory over Springfield (0-2, 0-2).

Lewis (2-2, 1-1) got 22 kills from Jay Petty and 11 from Ian Karbienner. The Warriors still lead the series with the Flyers 13-2, 4-1 in this tournament. Tonight’s match was the fourth time in the five tournament meetings that it was decided in five sets. 

Lewis and Springfield meet at 4 p.m. Saturday.
