HPD receives money to buy more electric guns
The Honolulu Police Department received a $25,000 grant Thursday from the nonprofit Honolulu Police Community Foundation to purchase 17 new electric guns, or taser guns.
The department has 609 electric guns in its current arsenal, 77 of which have been purchased by the foundation. HPD Chief Louis Kealoha said the goal is to eventually arm each of the department’s 2,000 officers with a taser.

The foundation supports police programs and offers scholars. Besides purchasing tasers, the organization has previously bought electronic defibrilators for HPD officers.
