Kitty’s summer repertoire is graffiti flavored

“Hello Kitty Graffiti,” Hello Kitty Beauty’s new limited-edition fall beauty collection, has arrived at Sephora.

The new collection pays tribute to daring graffiti artists with a palette ($35, pictured above) of two blush/bronzers and four eye shadows that capture the grays and charcoals of asphalt, concrete and sidewalks, with eye-popping pink and teal; “Rollergirl” roll-on perfume ($18); a compact mirror ($18); and a five-piece brush set ($49) housed in a Hello Kitty Graffiti container.

Hawaiian singing contest accepting groups till Friday

Can you sing Hawaiian music without a microphone? Got a group to sing it with? If so, you have until Friday to apply for a space in the 2011 Ka Himeni Ana Hawaiian amateur singing competition.

Founded by Honolulu businessman Richard Towill almost 30 years ago, Ka Himeni Ana preserves and perpetuates the Hawaiian tradition of nahenahe (sweet, melodious) music sung without microphones and played on unamplified acoustic instruments such as ukulele, guitar and bass (Hawaiian steel guitar is the only instrument that may be electrified).

The competition is open to amateur Hawaiian groups containing at least two and no more than five members. At least half the group must perform with instruments. Contestants are judged on vocal harmonies, use of the Hawaiian language and overall musicianship. Songs must be in the nahenahe style.

The contest will be held Aug. 27 at the Hawaii Theatre.

Cherry Blossom deadline pushed back to Aug. 15

The application deadline for potential Cherry Blossom Festival queen contestants has been extended to Aug. 15.

The Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce said it is seeking young women who cherish culture, education and community service for the 60th Cherry Blossom Festival.

The queen and court will be crowned at the festival ball in March.

One of the contestants will be awarded the annual Violet Niimi Oishi Scholarship Award, to be used toward continuing her education.

Applicants must have at least 50 percent Japanese ancestry and be single, between the ages of 19 and 26, a U.S. citizen and a Hawaii resident.
