Propane fire injures 2 Hilo plumbers
Two plumbers were burned Tuesday in a propane fire at an apartment building in Hilo, Hawaii County firefighters said.
Firefighters responded to a report of two burn victims because of a propane release on the rooftop of Bayshore Tower at 84 Pukihae St.
Firefighters said paramedics treated the men and took them to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition with first- and second-degree burns to the face and arms.
The propane source was shut off prior to the arrival of firefighters at about 12:20 p.m.
The men were installing a fitting onto the propane tank or some other kind of construction work when the incident happened, firefighters said.
2 blazes scorch brush in West Oahu
A brush fire burned about 80 acres Monday night in Nanakuli Valley.
The fire started at about 5:20 p.m. above some homes on Mokiawe Street on the Waianae side of the valley, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
While initially slow moving, the fire eventually burned up to the ridge, but didn’t cross over into the next valley. About 25 firefighters contained the fire by 8 p.m., Seelig said.
No homes were threatened.
The cause remained undetermined.
At the same time, firefighters also put out a small wild fire in a Makakilo gulch.
The fire burned about 400 square feet of brush in a hard-to-access area about 150 feet below some homes on Welo Street, Seelig said.
Firefighters contained the blaze within 20 minutes.
The cause of the 7:45 p.m. fire remained unknown.
