A group of 15 mariners, missing for three days, were spotted linking hands together to spell out “S.O.S.” as a Navy P-3 Orion long-range search aircraft passed over the island, on the small, uninhabited atoll of Fanano Friday.

APRA HARBOR, Guam >> Six children and nine adults are safe after their overdue boat was spotted on an uninhabited island in the Federated States of Micronesia.

The Coast Guard and Navy began searching for the boat Wednesday after transportation officials in the Micronesian state of Chuuk told the Coast Guard in Guam that the 28-foot skiff was overdue.

The Coast Guard received a report that the boat had been spotted marooned and overturned. The passengers ranging from 4 to 59 years old were found on the island’s shore Thursday in good condition.

The search combed an area of more than 18,000 square miles.
